Sugar Crash examines the health concerns surrounding excessive sugar consumption. It takes a close look at sugar intake in Ireland and explores its long-term health effects since the end of the Second World War. In the years following the war, people in Ireland were among the slimmest in Europe, yet today diabetes and other weight-related illnesses have gripped the country.
The documentary reveals that the average Irish adult consumes more than four times the daily recommended amount of sugar, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). Sugar has made its way into much of the food people consume, with large quantities hidden in many unexpected products.
Overconsumption of sugar is even more pronounced among children, and the documentary highlights how young people in particular are consuming dangerously high levels of sugar on a daily basis.
