In 2011, Valentin Thurn caused a sensation with his documentary "Taste the Waste - die globale Lebensmittelverschwendung." The film impressively showed how much food is simply thrown away worldwide, even though it is still edible.
With its clear message and shocking images, it reached a wide audience and brought the issue of food waste to the forefront of society. The film was so successful that it is still considered a milestone in the discussion about more conscious use of our food.
A year later, in 2012, Thurn founded the association "Foodsharing e.V." The aim was to put the idea of conscious use of food into practice and actively invite people to participate. Through Foodsharing, individuals, initiatives, and businesses can pass on surplus food instead of throwing it away. This idea quickly caught on and grew within a short time into a movement that is still supported by tens of thousands of volunteers throughout Germany.
In 2013, Valentin Thurn presented his second film, "Die Essensretter" (The Food Savers), to us. He directly tied in with the message of "Taste the Waste" and showed how much commitment and creativity goes into the fight against waste. We are particularly proud that the very first meeting of people interested in food sharing took place during our festival in Ludwigsburg. This small but significant moment developed into a strong community that continues to send an important message against the throwaway society.
